Scrapbook, 1860-1877.

The scrapbook, entitled "Reminiscences of the Albany Theater," consists of fifty pages of clippings of a newspaper series published in 1860 on the early history of Albany theater by George Stone and twenty-two handwritten pages on the same topic by "Pedro" [e.g., Henry D. Stone]. The article series is entitled, "Reminiscences by an 'old stager' and former Albanian." The article series is followed by a miscellaneous collection of other articles of anecdotes and obituaries of actors and performers. The articles mainly describe the 'low' theater entertainments like equestrian and strolling troupes, burlesque and Negro minstrelsy. They focus on the circus along the Northeastern seaboard, from Quebec to Philadelphia and include descriptions from the decline of animal menagerie to attacks on circuses in the "Western towns" by disciples of Blue Laws. There are also descriptions of a number of "museums" of the time, including the famous Trowbridge's Museum in Albany, where such oddities as the rope that hung Hamilton could be seen. There are also many descriptions of Negro acting, noting, "Negro minstrelsy has held its own down to the present day, it now being in full feather, and is likely to continue for years to come." The scrapbook includes an extensive index by Henry, with such entries as "Extortions, Ministerial," "Fight in Circus, sham, between actors," "Lottery tickets, wages paid in," "Negro Delineator, death of first," and "Perambulating Show." There are also marginal notes and proofreading marks present by Joel Munsell (1808-1880), historian and printer of Albany. The folder contains a letter, dated 8 January 1867, to Munsell from publisher Joseph Ireland ( - ), as well as several newsclippings.
